Framed Hand Colored Etching Dodson's Tavern, Petersburg, Virginia. The etching features Dodson's tavern with the Dodson tavern sign with two colonial men on horses outside the tavern. The etching is framed and matted. History: John Dodson built this tavern in 1753 prior to the city of Petersburg becoming an official city in order to fulfill the drinking, lodging and food needs of all sorts of people. The tavern served the needs of visitors to the city, it offered rooms above the tavern along with meal service. In 1789 because of booming business, Dodson added space to the tavern. However in 1815 disaster struct the tavern when a stable fire raced through the streets and burned down the whole town including Dodson's tavern. The Dodson family rebuilt the tavern after the fire. Many famous people eat and drank at the tavern during its history including the Marquis de Lafayette, the infamous Aaron Burr and his daughter Theodosia and General Lee. The Dodson family lived in the tavern home until 1972 at which time the home was sold.
